When making the decision to invest in gold, novices often choose to buy gold coins. Purchasing these coins is an easy way to stake one’s claim in this precious metal. The recent rise in gold coins value and price has created increased demand for these items in many worldwide markets.
Gold is either the only or the main ingredient in most of these precious coins. The majority of gold coins are made either as an item for collectors or as bullion coins for investing purposes. The value of these coins is determined by their quality, rarity, grade, popularity, and current price in the investment market.
The 1933 United States Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is considered the most valuable gold coin in the world. The Double Eagle was issued each year from 1907 through 1932. There were 445,500 Double Eagle coins minted with a 1933 date, but they were never released into circulation. This was due to currency law changes made during the Great Depression that resulted in the United States dropping the Gold Standard currency system.
The 1933 Double Eagle supply was melted down and converted to gold bullion bars. However, a small supply of the coins was somehow removed from the U.S. Mint prior to being melted down. These Double Eagles have since experienced quite an adventure, including some being owned by an Egyptian king, becoming the object of a federal sting operation, and moving from storage in the World Trade Center shortly before the September 11 terrorist attacks. It is not known how many of these rare coins are still in existence, but experts estimate there are approximately 20. In July 2002, one Double Eagle coin sold at auction for $7.6 million dollars.
Though most gold coins value and price will not reach these figures, the items are still a very wise and safe investment. During an unstable economy, the price of gold increases dramatically, as we have witnessed over the recent decade. Buy gold coins now before the price goes even higher and make a nice profit by selling when the price of gold peaks.
